about

Nereus was the shape-shifting, truth-telling "Old Man of the Sea" of Greek myth.

Nereus was also the name of a remotely operated underwater vehicle, the keystone of the HADES (Hadal Ecosystems Study) program, which descended nearly 7 miles beneath the ocean's surface in the Challenger Deep. In 2014, it was gathering samples in the Kermadec Trench near Fiji when all communication with it was lost. The next day, plastic pieces of debris were found near the dive site.

Nereus is the artist's first album release under the Starthief name. It follows a two year period of exploration and refocusing on ambient and abstract music created with modular synthesizers.

This album is dedicated to the study of Earth's oceans, especially in the depths where sunlight never reaches, once thought barren but secretly teeming with "alien" life. We have so much to learn about biology, geology, climate, and even other worlds by exploring our own world's darkest and most inaccessible places.
